"Mandy" macht's möglich! Vor einem Jahr begleitete er noch andere am Klavier - heute ist Barry Manilow selbst ein As in den Hitparaden. Hier ist seine Story... Neil Diamond, Susan Dey und viele andere Prominente sitzen im berühmten Klub "Troubadour" in Los Angeles. Sie sind gekommen, um den neuen Senk-rechtstarter unter die Lupe zu nehmen: Barry Manilow, der über Nacht mit seinem Song "Mandy" ein Star wurde. Und Barry weiß, was auf dem Spiel steht. Wenn er hier ankommt, hat er es geschafft. Barry schafft es. Eineinhalb Stunden spielt er Klavier und singt Rock, Balladen und eine eigene Version eines Preludes von Chopin. Das Publikum rast. Am nächsten Morgen treffe ich Barry in seinem bescheidenen Hotel. Es ist kein Hotel, in dem Stars absteigen. "Das kann ich mir nicht leisten. Ich bin seit vier Monaten auf Tournee, spiele in kleinen Klubs. Die Gage im "Troubadour" beträgt 1.500 Doller die Woche. Nicht viel Geld, wenn man bedenkt, daß ich mit 13 Leuten unterwegs bin und pro Woche 8.000 Dollar für Hotels, Gagen und Flugtickets berappen muß. Ich zahle also gewaltig drauf, muß meine ganzen Ersparnisse in meine Karriere stecken. Deswegen ist für mich eine Reaktion wie gestern abend so ungeheuer wichtig. Ich hätte aufgehört, wenn ich nicht so angekommen wäre..." Barry wurde am 17. Juni 1943 in New York  geboren. Er ist 1,80 m groß, hat blaue Augen und blonde Haare. "Mit elf Jahren lernte ich Akkordeon, mit 13 Klavier, Musik lag mir immer, aber Musik als Beruf konnte ich mir damals nicht vorstellen. So besuchte ich nach der Highschool ein College und studierte "Werbung". Das langweilte mich nach einem Jahr. Deshalb wechselte ich zum New Yorker College of Music. Wir hatten nicht viel Geld, und ich mußte mir das Studium selbst verdienen. Ich arbeitete im Postzimmer von CBS, der großen Fernseh-, Rundfunk- und Plattengesellschaft. Mit 21 hatte ich mich zum Film-Redakteur hochgearbeitet. Aber den Büro-Job hatte ich bald satt. So fing ich an, Klavier in Bars zu spielen. Ich wollte ein Arrangeur wie Henry Mancini werden. ich sagte mir, alles was ich brauche, ist eine heiße Sängerin als Partnerin. Vor vier Jahren tat ich mich mit Bette Midler zusammen. Drei Monate später hatte sie einen Plattenvertrag, sie wurde ein Star." Inzwischen ist sie aber von Barry überrundet worden. Von Bette Midler war im letzten Jahr nicht mehr viel die Rede. Um so mehr von Barry - er ist der Geheimtip für 1975!

You came in order to take the new normal starter under the magnifier: Barry Manilow, who became a star overnight with his song "Mandy". And Barry knows what stands on the game. If it arrives here, he created it. Barry creates it. One hours he plays piano and sings skirt, ballads - and an own version of a Preludes of Chopin. The public races. At the next morning I meet Barry in his modest hotel. No hotel in which stars descend is. "I can not afford this. I am on tour for four months, play in small clubs. The fee in the "Troubadour" conducts $ 1,500 per week. Not a lot of money, if one considers, that I am on tour with 13 people and have to pay $ 8,000 weekly for hotels, fees and flight tickets. I have to pay for that tremendously on top, and stick my whole savings into my career. Therefore a reaction like yesterday evening is enormously important for me. I would have stopped if I hadn't arrived" ... " Barry was born in New York on the 17th June 1946 (in 1943). He is 1,80 m tall, has blue eyes, fair hairs. "With eleven years I learned accordion, with 13 piano. Music suited always to me, but I could not imagine music as a profession then. So I visited a college according to the Highschool and studied 'advertising'. That bored me after a year. Therefore I changed to the New York college of Music. We did not have a lot of money, and I had to earn the study by myself. I worked in the mail room of CBS, the large TV-/ radio and record company. Whith 21 I went up to a film-editor. However, the Office - I soon had job fully. So I started playing piano into bars. I wanted to become an arranger like Henry Mancini. I said to myself, all what I need, is a hot singer as a partner. Four years ago I met  Bette Midler. Three months later they got a record contract, she became a star. "  Meanwhile Barry is a bigger star than Bette is. Barry Manilow: Amerikas heimliche Hit-Fabrik Wo er seine Finger im Spiel hat, ist der Erfolg fast sicher. Barry machte nicht nur mit selbst gesungenen Liedern von sich reden, er schrieb auch für andere Stars Top-Hits, zum Beispiel die neue Nummer für Donna Summer. Bei einem Besuch in München verriet er BRAVO seine neuesten Pläne... Am auffälligsten an ihm sind die langen Beine. Beine, die nie aufzuhören scheinen. "Von meinen Beinen schwärmten schon die Girls im New Yorker Stadtteil Brooklyn", erzählt er lachend in der BRAVO-Redaktion. "Auf Schul- bällen war ich der Hahn im Korb, weil ich der beste Tänzer war", sagt Barry (30=33). Später studierte er am New Yorker College of Music. Heute noch ist Barry ein begeisterter Tänzer. "Allerdings fehlt mir jetzt die Zeit dazu". Barry hat sich nämlich inzwischen zu einer 1-Mann-Hitfabrik gemausert - ist dabei aber bescheiden geblieben. "Eigentlich wollte ich im Fernsehen auf- treten", erzählt er. "Das wäre auch wichtig, um in Deutschland meine Fans zu halten. Solange sie nur die Platte kaufen können, wissen sie nicht, was ich sonst noch zu bieten habe. Ausserdem müsste ich mich auch auf der Bühne vorstellen. Aber dazu ist die Zeit zu knapp. Ich kann nur zwei Tage in Deutschland bleiben. Nächste Woche stehe ich schon in New York vor den Fernsehkameras für eine eigene TV-Show." Fünf Jahre lang wird Barry einmal jährlich im US-Fernsehen auftreten. "Die Bosse wollten mich eigentlich einmal wöchentlich, aber dann hätten sie mich verheizt, und mir wäre für nichts anderes mehr Zeit geblieben. Dann wäre ich zu einer Show- und Musikmaschine geworden." Daher lässt es Barry lieber langsam angehen. "Dann kann ich mich immer noch meinen Hobbys widmen, vor allem meinem Jagdhund. Er ist mein bester Freund. Wenn ich mit ihm durch die New Yorker Parks schlendere, fallen mir auch die besten Songs ein." Fünf Top-Hits lieferte er seit 1974, sein "Mandy" war 1975 die in Amerika am meisten verkaufte Platte. David Cassidy sang sein "I Write The Songs", mit dem er lange auch in den deutschen Charts war, und jetzt ist es Donna Summer, die mit seinem "Could It Be magic" in Amerika ihren zweiten Hit hat. Barry selbst ist mit "Tryin' To Get The Feeling Again" im Augenblick wieder oben. Und im Herbst will er wieder nach Deutschland kommen. "Das habe ich mir jedenfalls ganz fest vorgenommen." Auf seinem Pullover steht zwar Rock'n'Roll - aber das darf man nicht so ernst nehmen. Barry Manilow ist Meister sanfter Songs.

Barry Manilow: America's secret hit factory Success is almost certain where his name is involved. Barry is not only a talking point because of the songs which he sings himself, he also writes top hits for other stars, for example Donna Summer's new song. During a visit to Munich, Barry told BRAVO about his latest plans... The most conspicuous point about him are his long legs. Legs which do not seem to end. 'Even in the past, the girls in the New York district Brooklyn were mad about my legs', he tells us with a laugh at BRAVO's editorial office. 'At the high school dance, I was everbody's darling, since I was the best dancer', Barry says. Later he studied at the New York College of Music. Nowadays Barry is still an enthusiastic dancer. 'However, I don't have time for this now.' For in the meantime, Barry has become a one-man hit factory - but he is still modest. 'Actually I wanted to appear on TV', he tells. 'This would also be important in order to keep my fans in Germany. As long as they can only buy my record they do not know what else I have to offer. And I should present myself on stage. But there is not enough time. I can stay in Germany for two days only. Next week I will be in front of the TV cameras in New York for my own TV show...' For five years in a row, Barry will be on US television once a year. 'Actually the bosses wanted me once a week, but then they would cause me to burn out and I would not have time for anything else. I would become a show and music machine.' Therefore Barry prefers the slow way. 'Then I can still dedicate time to my hobbies, above all my hunting dog. She is my best friend. When I go for a stroll with her through the parks in New York, the best songs come to my mind.' Since 1974 he has had five top hits, his song 'Mandy' was the best-selling record in America in 1975. David Cassidy sang his song 'I write the songs' which positioned him in the German charts for quite a while and now it is Donna Summer who has her second hit in America with his song 'Could it be magic'. At the moment, Barry himself is at the top again with 'Tryin' to get the feeling again'. In the fall, he wants to come to Germany again. 'At least, this is what I plan to do.' His pullover says 'Rock'n'Roll' - but you should not take that too seriously. Barry Manilow is a master of soft songs.

'As a teenager I did not think at all of making a living as a musician! I always liked music but it was out of the question for me to work in this business. I simply did not want to run a risk.' This is what Barry Manilow says, according to record sales the hottest male star in America today. In the States, each of his concerts from Las Vegas to Broadway is sold out and his fans are from all age groups. From teenager to grandma. Barry grew up with his mother and his grandparents in Brooklyn, New York. There was never any money in the house, his parents were divorced. At the age of 11, he learned to play the accordeon, he started to take piano lessons when he was 13. But when he left high school, he studied advertising for a year first. Then he changed to the 'College of Music'. 'I worked in the mailroom of a major record company in order to earn the money for my studies. This worked out well but I did not want to become a mere desk worker. So I played the piano in bars in the evenings. I wanted to become a famous arranger like Henry Mancini. I said to myself that all I needed was a hot singer whom I could accompany. So I found Bette Midler... I was her arranger, I produced her records - she became a major star and I obtained many other contracts.' In 1975 'Mandy' was the first own hit of the singer and composer Barry Manilow who is now entering the charts here. Everything went very fast then. He started to go on tour, success was getting bigger and bigger, and 'Copacabana' is a huge hit for Barry once again. He thinks he is much too thin and too lanky and he laughs about his teeth à la Buggs Bunny! He has sold more than 20 million albums - Barry Manilow is well-off. In addition to his apartment in NY, he owns a huge luxury villa in Los Angeles where he lives with his girlfriend Linda Allen. He is still amazed at the success of his first European tour. 'I simply could not believe that the people over there knew me as well and I was terribly afraid of the concerts ...' Still all of them were sold out!

Er begann zu touren, die Erfolge wurden immer größer, und mit "Copacabana" hat der blonde Barry mal wieder einen Superhit laufen. Barry Manilow: The singer with the flattering-voice Long queues in front of the box office and screaming fans inside the venue, autograph hunter inside the hotel - it's always the same during his tour. Currently the soft blonde boy with the flattering voice fills the concert halls in Germany. On his Germany-tour he celebrated rushing successes. But in England it caused hysteria - almost: 65 000 fans had not shunned - even in case of icy cold - the wide way to the airport only in order to see their idol walk on the landing field. They swung Manilow poster and "Welcome" banners called again and again "Barry, we love you". The audience in the hall screeched when Barry Manilow began his concert with the sentence: "Skinny men like me with big noses are supposed to have large hearts, too." And it is that what makes so agreeable the 34 years old US star next to his flattering-voice. With all success it remained humanly and of course, a model that stands for his weaknesses. Openly he adds, that he suffers from depressions now and then and his complex also today still his- as he is mean-too big nose. Was borne Barry on 17.06.1943 in the New York quarter Brooklyn-the mother Edna, an unemployed actress, had no cent, the father soon after the birth of the small one of the dust got down. Derzeit füllt der sanfte Blonde mit der Schmeichelstimme bei uns die Säle.... Auf seiner Deutschland-Tournee feierte er rauschende Erfolge. Aber in England löste er geradezu Hysterie aus: 65 000 Fans hatten selbst bei eisiger Kälte den weiten Weg zum Flughafen nicht gescheut, nur um ihr Idol über das Rollfeld gehen zu sehen. Sie schwenkten Manilow-Poster und „Welcome"-Transparente, riefen immer wieder „Barry, we love you". Im Saal kreischten die Zuhörer auf, als Barry Manilow sein Konzert mit dem Satz begann: „Dünne Männer wie ich, die große Nasen haben, sollen auch große Herzen haben." Und das ist es, was den 34jährigen US-Star neben seiner Schmeichelstimme so sympathisch macht. Bei allem Erfolg ist er menschlich und natürlich geblieben, ein Typ, der zu seinen Schwächen steht. Offen gibt er zu, daß er ab und zu unter Depressionen leidet und sein Komplex auch heute noch seine - wie er meint - zu große Nase ist. Geboren wurde Barry am 17.06.1943 im New Yorker Viertel Brooklyn - die Mutter Edna, eine arbeitslose Schauspielerin, hatte keinen Cent, der Vater machte sich bald nach der Geburt des Kleinen aus dem Staub. Barry war ein trauriges Kind - darum kaufte seine Mutter ihm ein Akkordeon. Barry spielte bald seine sanften, traurigen Lieder in Brooklyns Straßenschluchten. Daß Barry Plattenstar werden würde, das konnte damals wirklich noch niemand ahnen. Erst als die Mutter wieder heiratete, und der Stiefvater Barrys musikalisches Talent entdeckte, ging’s bergauf. Der Junge bekam ein Klavier und wollte von da an Musiker werden. Barry studierte am Konservatorium und bekam dann seine erste Stelle bei einer Plattenfirma. Aber nicht als Musiker - sondern in der Poststelle. Er mußte Briefe verteilen und Platten verpacken, um seine Brötchen zu verdienen. Nebenbei komponierte er Songs, half bei Broadway-Shows und trat Abends in kleinen Clubs als Pianist auf. Als er wieder einmal den Club gewechselt hatte, sollte er eine Sängerin, eine gewisse Bette Midler auf dem Klavier begleiten. Bette Midler - die heutige „Göttliche Miss M", wie sie die Amerikaner bewun-dernd nennen. Sie wurde Barrys gute Fee: Als sie 1971 ihren ersten Platten-vertrag unterschrieb, war er mit von der Partie. Er nahm mit Bette eine LP auf, die sie über Nacht berühmt machte, begleitete sie auf ihren Tourneen. Eines Tages forderte Bette ihn auf, während der Pausen selbst zu singen. Er erzählt: „Während sie sich in der Garderobe umzog, mußte ich raus auf die Bühne und singen. Es waren die fürchterlichsten Momente meines Lebens." Aber es waren die wichtigsten - den seine Samtstimme, sein blondes Haar und seine verträumten blauen Augen gefielen dem Publikum. Damit die Leute ihn nicht gleich wieder vergessen sollten, ging Barry anschließend allein auf Tournee. Auf der Bühne sang er Melodien, die jedes Kind in Amerika trällerte. Es waren seine eigenen, denn Barry hatte nebenbei immer wieder aus Finanzgründen Musik für Werbe-Spots komponiert. Und seine Songs für Hamburger, Cola und Brathähnchen waren damals in den USA so etwas wie heimliche Hits. Die Amerikaner waren begeistert davon, daß sie den Komponisten dieser „Ohrwürmer" kennenlernen konnten, wenn der tingelte. Die Tournee wurde ein Erfolg. Dadurch wurden Plattenproduzenten auf Barry aufmerksam. Sein erstes Album erschien. Mit den Hits „Mandy" und „Copacabana" kletterte er ganz nach oben im Show-Geschäft. Seine Frau lief ihm davon 1978 wurde der amerikanische Super-Softie auch in Deutschland bekannt. Er stellte sich in der ZDF-„Starparade" vor, gab Konzerte in München und Frankfurt. Auch bei uns kam seine einschmeichelnde Stimme auf Anhieb an. Erfolg, Reichtum, Konzerte rund um die Welt: Das hat den blonden Sänger seine Ehefrau gekostet. Mit 20 hatten sie geheiratet; er war damals noch unbekannt und wenig betucht, strebte nach Geld, Ruhm und Anerkennung. Seine Frau hat ihn nach knapp zwei Jahren wieder verlassen. Heute lebt er mit seiner Freundin Linda und seinem Hund Fritz in einer Villa in Los Angeles. Er sagt: „Nicht Linda ist mein Leben, die Musik ist es." Trotzdem ist er glück- lich mit ihr, schwärmt von ihrer Schönheit und auch von ihrer Klugheit...

Barry Manilow said overwhelmed: "I come back!"

Barry Manilow Every morning 100 pushups Bravo: Your tour will be ending with the February-concerts in Germany. What are you going to do next? Barry: I go back to Los Angeles where I have a very beautiful house for three years. In next time I would like to attend some acting classes of Nina Foch and in addition I will take some private lessons. Bravo: Do you have some plans to play in a movie? Barry: Yes, there are already some plans. However, I can't give you concrete details yet. But it is possible that I get a good script. And I want to be prepared for that. Bravo: Do you have any hobbies? Barry: I am a big fan of crossword-puzzel and an enthusiastic back- gammon-player. Furthermore, I read the "New York Times"-Bestseller list up and down. Bravo: Are you, like a lot of your colleagues, crazy about cars? Barry: No, I have a plain normal silver BMW. I did my driver's license just 3 years ago, when I moved away from New York. I also don't like to drive fast - rather defensively. Bravo: How do you keep yourself fit? Barry:  My tours are keeping me fit. I lose a kilo during every concert. Additionally I do 100 pushups every morning.  (Really ???) Bravo: Do you take your beagle-dog with you on tour? Barry: No, "Bage" stays rather at home in Los Angeles.

"Meine Lieder sind meine Kinder" Vor zwanzig Minuten noch hat er auf der Bühne gestanden. Zweieinhalb Stunden lang alles gegeben, eine perfekte Show gezeigt. Jetzt zum Interview trägt Barry Manilow (51) Jeans und Jeanshemd, auf der monumentalen Nase eine Brille. Müde? Kein Stück, eher aufgekratzt und voller Energie. Frage: Sie bringen mit Ihrer Musik Millionen Frauen zum Träumen. Gab es für Sie schon mal ein böses Erwachen? Barry: Oh ja! Vor zehn Jahren! Ich wollte ein Haus kaufen, und mein neuer Manager teilte mir mit, daß ich bankrott sei. Nach all den Jahren, nach Millionen Platten und Tourneen hatte ich noch 11.000 Dollar. Meine alten Berater hatten alles falsch investiert, ich war pleite. Es war absolut schrecklich! Seitdem kümmere ich mich selbst um meine Finanzen. Frage: Haben Sie Angst davor, arm zu sein? Barry: Nein. Ich weiß ja, wie das ist. Ich bin in Brooklyn geboren, einem der ärmsten Viertel von New York. Ich habe in einem kleinen Apartment gelebt und könnte das auch heute wieder. Frage: Worauf könnten Sie nicht verzichten? Barry: Auf mein Piano. Frage: Gibt es noch Freunde aus Ihrer Kindheit und Jugend? Barry: Nein. Mit New York verbindet mich nichts mehr. Die Stadt ist so wütend, rauh und aggressiv. Meine Heimat ist Los Angeles (Anmerkung: inzwischen Palm Springs). Frage: Wie leben Sie da? Barry: In einem herrlichen Haus in Bel Air. Mein Tonstudio hat nur Glas- wände. Wenn ich Musik mache, sehe ich Bäume und Vögel. Frage: Sie haben keine Familie? Barry: Nein. Meine Eltern leben nicht mehr, ich habe keine Geschwister. Als junger Kerl war ich mal verheiratet, von 21 bis 23. Aber ich bin kein Ehemann. Ich liebe meinen Beruf zu sehr. Frage: Gibt es eine Frau in Ihrem Leben? Barry: Ja und nein. Ich war 15 Jahre lang mit Linda zusammen. Wir lieben uns noch heute, leben aber nicht mehr zusammen. Frage: Wollten Sie nie Kinder? Barry: Vor zehn Jahren habe ich mal gedacht, eigentlich wäre es doch schön, Kinder zu haben. Aber dieser Wunsch kam mehr vom Verstand her, weil alle Leute Kinder haben. Tief im Inneren wußte ich immer, daß ich kein guter Vater wäre. Ich wäre nie bereit gewesen, für ein Kind meinen Beruf einzuschränken. Also habe ich Lieder geschaffen. Meine Lieder - das sind meine Kinder. Frage: Wenn Sie ein Tier wären - was wären Sie am liebsten? Barry: Ein Hund. Hunde sind zuverlässig, treu. Ich glaube, früher war ich eine Gazelle. Dünn, aber sehr graziös. Frage: Beten Sie manchmal? Barry: Ich halte Zwiesprache mit einer höheren Macht. Die Kirche als Institution lehne ich ab. Kirchliche Lehren bauen auf Angst und Furcht auf. Und damit hat der Glaube nichts zu tun.

For two-and-a-half hours he gave it all, he presented a perfect show. For the interview Barry Manilow (48) is wearing jeans and a jeans shirt, glasses on his monumental nose. Tired? Not at all, rather excited and full of energy. BdF: With your music you make millions of women dream. Did you ever experience a rude awakening? Barry: Oh yes! Ten years ago! I wanted to buy a house and my new manager told me that I was bankrupt. After all those years, after millions of records and tours I still had 11,000 dollars. My old consultants had invested everything wrongly, I was broke. It was absolutely devastating! Since then I have been taking care of my finances myself. BdF: Are you afraid of being poor? Barry: No. I do know how it is. I was born in Brooklyn, one of the poorest districts of New York. I lived in a small apartment and I could do it again today. Is there something you cannot do without? My piano. Are there still any friends from your childhood or youth? No. There is no more connection to New York. The city is so furious, raw, and aggressive. Los Angeles is my home. How do you live there? In a beautiful house in Bel Air. My studio does only have glass walls. When I am making music I see trees and birds. You do not have a family, do you? No. My parents do not live any more, I do not have brothers and sisters. As a young man I was married, from 21 to 23. But I am not a husband. I love my job too much. Is there a woman in your life? Yes and no. Linda and I were together for 15 years. We still love each other today but we do not live together any more. You never wanted to have children? Ten years ago I thought it would be nice to have children. But this wish was rather rational, since everybody has children. Deep inside I always knew that I would not be a good father. I would never have been prepared to cut back my job for a child. So I created songs. My songs - they are my children. If you were an animal, what would you like to be? A dog. Dogs are reliable, faithful. I think I used to be a gazelle. Thin, but very graceful. Do you pray sometimes? I communicate with a higher being. I disapprove of the Church as an insti-tution. Ecclesiastical doctrines build up fear. And this is not what faith is all about.

Frau im Spiegel – 'I never wanted to become a singer'  An unexpected confession of the American all-rounder on his 'Greatest Hits Tour' Do you also sing in the bath tub? No, never. I do not sing at all in private. Singing is only business for you then? No passion? No, it is no passion - I never wanted to become a singer, I wanted to become a musician. How did it happen then? 'Mandy'! Is it true that you originally told the story of a dog with 'Mandy'? I did not write 'Mandy'. Arista Records in New York suggested to me that I should put the song on my album. Then it simply exploded. After that I sang 'I Write The Songs', 'Can’t Smile Without You', and other songs for Arista. I wrote 'Copacabana', 'This One’s For You' myself. Thus I am a singing composer, producer, everything. But I never thought of becoming a singer actually. In 1975 I was the first time on stage with 'Mandy'. At that time I was 30 and I already had my career as a pianist, composer, and producer. I worked with Bette Midler for four years. Since then I have sold 65 million records. How does it feel to be adored by so many women? It feels like hovering - a wonderful feeling, and I am very grateful for this - but you must not take it seriously. It’s a big fun.

Ich singe überhaupt nicht privat. Singen ist also nur Business für Sie? Nicht auch eine Leidenschaft? Nein, es ist keine Leidenschaft - ich wollte nie Sänger, ich wollte Musiker werden. Wie kam es dann dazu? "Mandy"! Stimmt es, daß Sie mit "Mandy" ursprünglich die Geschichte eines Hundes erzählten? Ich habe "Mandy" nicht geschrieben. Arista Records in New York schlug mir vor, den Song auf mein Album zu bringen. Dann explodierte es einfach. Ich habe anschließend "I Write The Songs", "Can’t Smile Without You" und anderes für Arista gesungen. Selbst geschrieben habe ich "Copacabana", "This One’s For You". Ich bin also ein singender Komponist, Produzent, alles. Aber eigentlich habe ich nie daran gedacht, Sänger zu werden. Mit "Mandy" stand ich 1975 zum ersten Mal auf einer Bühne. Damals war ich 30 und hatte schon meine Karriere als Pianospieler, Komponist und Produzent. Vier Jahre lang arbeitete ich mit Bette Midler zusammen. Seitdem habe ich 65 Millionen Platten verkauft. Was ist das für ein Gefühl, von so vielen Frauen angehimmelt zu werden? Es ist, als würde man schweben - ein wunderbares Gefühl, und ich bin sehr dankbar dafür - aber man darf das nicht ernst nehmen. Do you still have stage fright before your shows? No, I enjoy it. I go to see my friends. It is always a lot of fun. It is rare that a composer does not enjoy singing. Do not understand me wrong: It is not the case that I do not like to sing, I have a lot of fun doing so. But if it was over tomorrow I would not start this all over again. If I could chose I would prefer to write and produce songs. What is your favourite of your own songs? I think it is 'Could It Be Magic' - because it is my oldest song and it is still up-to-date though. The group 'Take That' has just produced a remake. How do you protect your private life? I have a wonderful estate in the mountains of Bel Air (Beverly Hills). There are a gate and a fence, nobody can look over them - thus it is boring to have a look at my home and the fans do not disturb me. In private you rather shun publicity. Of course I could go to restaurants or big parties in order to be seen - but that's not really my thing. What are your hobbies? Music and nothing else. Above all Jazz, Gerry Mulligan was a highlight - he was my hero and it was a huge honour to work with him. Do you still have any idols? No, all of my idols are dead. Except for Frank Sinatra. And Sting is brilliant - yes, I like Sting very much. What are your strong points? Well... I think I am friendly, I encourage people - I believe in myself and I think that mankind is good by nature. And the weak points? I think I am too much of a perfectionist. I work all the time and I do not give myself enough possibilities to simply relax... And something else (he hesitates): I would like to have a stronger body. Yes, I am much too thin - but all attempts to change this are unsuccessful. But there are so many bodybuilding studios in Hollywood. I do bodybuilding! What you see here (points to his body with a theatrical gesture) is 'after' and not 'before'. How do you recharge your energy? With music - this is no work for me, it really is a passion. The secret of your hits? Maybe the secret is that everything I do comes from the heart. The few times I tried to force success I failed. But as long as music comes from God, this means from the bottom of my heart, I feel that everything is fine. Today 'Copacabana' is a musical - do you continue in this direction? Yes, I am working on two new musicals at the moment. One of them tells the story of the 'Comedian Harmonists'. You are now on your 'Greatest Hits Tour' in Germany and this means for the first time on tour in Europe after 8 years. Can you tell your female fans that there is still a free spot in your heart? I do not only want to address the female fans, but all the fans and tell them: The German audience is great!

Haben Sie noch Lampenfieber vor Ihren Auftritten? Nein, ich genieße sie. Ich gehe zu meinen Freunden. Es macht immer großen Spaß. Es ist selten, daß ein Komponist nicht gern singt. Verstehen Sie das nicht falsch: Es ist nicht so, daß ich das Singen nicht mag, ich habe viel Spaß daran. Aber wenn es morgen vorbei wäre, würde ich nicht noch einmal damit anfangen. Könnte ich wählen, würde ich lieber Songs schreiben und produzieren. Welchen Ihrer Songs mögen Sie am liebsten? Ich glaube, "Could It Be Magic" - weil er mein ältester Song ist und doch aktuell. Die Gruppe "Take That" produzierte gerade ein Remake. Wie schützen Sie Ihr Privatleben? Ich habe ein wunderbares Grundstück in den Bergen von Bel Air (Beverly Hills). Da gibt es ein Tor und einen Zaun, über den niemand sehen kann - es ist also langweilig, bei mir vorbeizuschauen, und die Fans belästigen mich nicht. Sie zeigen sich privat eher selten in der Öffentlichkeit. Natürlich könnte ich in Restaurants gehen oder auf große Partys, um gesehen zu werden, aber das ist einfach nicht mein Ding. Was sind Ihre Hobbys? Musik und nichts weiter. Vor allem Jazz, Gerry Mulligan war ein Highlight - er war  der Held für mich, und es war eine große Ehre, mit ihm zusammen-zuarbeiten. Haben Sie noch Idole? Nein, meine Idole sind alle tot. Bis auf Frank Sinatra. Und Sting ist großartig - ja, Sting mag ich sehr. Wo liegen Ihre Stärken? Nun... ich glaube, ich bin freundlich, ich ermutige die Leute - ich glaube an mich selbst und daß der Mensch von Grund auf gut ist. Und die Schwächen? Ich glaube, ich bin ein zu großer Perfektionist. Ich arbeite die ganze Zeit und gebe mir selbst nicht genug Möglichkeit, einfach zu entspannen... Und noch etwas (er zögert): Ich würde gern einen kräftigeren Körper haben. Ja, ich bin viel zu dünn - aber alle Versuche, etwas dagegen zu tun, scheitern. Dabei gibt es doch gerade in Hollywood so viele Bodybuilding-Studios. Ich mache Bodybuilding! Das, was Sie hier sehen (zeigt mit theatralischer Geste auf seinen Körper), ist "nachher" und nicht "vorher". Wie laden Sie Ihre Energie auf? Mit der Musik - das ist keine Arbeit für mich, sondern wirklich eine Leiden-schaft. Das Geheimnis Ihrer Hits? Vielleicht liegt es darin, daß alles, was ich mache, von Herzen kommt. Die wenigen Male, die ich versucht habe, einen Erfolg zu erzwingen, scheiterten. Aber solange die Musik von Gott, also von tiefstem Herzen kommt, spüre ich, es ist alles in Ordnung. "Copacabana" ist heute ein Musical - gehen Sie weiter in diese Richtung? Ja, ich arbeite gerade an zwei neuen Musicals. Eines davon erzählt das Leben der "Comedian Harmonists". Sie sind jetzt auf Ihrer "Greatest-Hits-Tour" in Deutschland und damit seit 8 Jahren zum ersten Mal wieder in Europa auf Tournee. Können Sie Ihren weiblichen Fans sagen, daß noch ein Platz in Ihrem Herzen frei ist? True indeed: in Manila where Barry Manilow gave sold-out concerts to more than 150,000 people, in England where Princess Diana is one of his greatest fans, in the USA where Frank Sinatra pointed at the shy guy with the mischievous smile and said, 'He's next!' He has become 'a living legend in show business and a giant' (Rolling Stone Magazine). A pro and an experienced artist. He does not know stage fright before his shows, 'Why? When I go on stage I go out to see my friends.' There he has it easy – with this voice for the special moments. With his romantic songs such as 'Could it be magic' or 'Can’t smile without you'. The secret of his hits, 'Everything I do comes from the heart.' And it hits the heart. This goes for Germany as well where he last performed five years ago. Wohl wahr: ob in Manila, wo Barry Manilow ausverkaufte Konzerte vor mehr als 150.000 Menschen gab, in England, wo Prinzessin Diana zu seinen größten Verehrerinnen gehört, in den USA, wo Frank Sinatra auf den schüchternen Jungen mit dem verschmitzten Lächeln zeigte und ver-kündete: "Er ist der nächste"! Längst zu Lebzeiten eine "Legende im Showgeschäft und ein Gigant" (Rolling-Stone-Magazin). Ein Profi und Routinier. Lampenfieber vor seinen Auftritten kennt er nicht: "Wieso? Wenn ich auf die Bühne gehe, gehe ich hinaus zu meinen Freunden". Da hat er es leicht - mit dieser Stimme für gewisse Stunden. Mit seinen Schmusesongs wie "Could It Be Magic" oder "Can’t Smile Without You". Das Geheimnis seiner Hits: Alles, was ich mache, kommt von Herzen". Und trifft ins Herz. Auch in Deutschland, wo er vor fünf Jahren zum letzten Mal gastierte. Vor dem Wiedersehen mit seinen Fans zwischen Hamburg und München nun doch ein wenig Lampenfieber: "Das wird für mich eine große Überraschung werden". Und offene Fragen: "Ich weiß nicht einmal, welche meiner Lieder dort bekannt sind - und ob ich dort überhaupt noch ein Publikum habe". Er wird sich wundern... Doch wirklich Lampenfieber? Doch er besteht darauf: "Wenn es morgen damit vorbei wäre, würde ich nicht noch einmal damit anfangen". Noch aber ist es nicht vorbei. Sein musikalisches Schaffen ohnehin nicht: Nachdem aus seinem Erfolgshit "Copacabana" ein Musical wurde, arbeitet Barry Manilow an einem zweiten Bühnenwerk. Da kann er sich austoben. Als Komponist, Arrangeur und Produzent. Gefeiert freilich wird der schüchterne Junge mit dem verschmitzten Lächeln am meisten als Sänger. Wenn auch wider Willen, bestimmt nicht widerwillig.
